Royal Horse Artillery

Postby lemataf » 04 Oct 2009 22:03

Good evening,

here is below a new found of the week-end. I would appreciate some help to identify this unit, or branch of cavalry, and possibly time period.

Is the man sat in the chair an officer ? Any idea of the (campaign) medals that the NCOs wear ?

Thanks in advance & regards,

JD

Hi JD,
Nice photo.
Not in fact cavalry at all, but Royal Horse Artillery. Compare with the photos on this page:
http://www.hussards-photos.com/UK/UK_RHA.htm#RHA

Indeed you have a seated officer and 3 NCOs behind.
The medals the NCOs are wearing appear to be QSAs, so Boer War veterans.
That means of course we can date the photo from the period 1902-14

Hello Mike,

here we go with a closer view of this man + his comrad on the left.
Seems that there is a king crown above the left man's rank insignias <=> Edward VII's time ? Any idea of this left's man function / duty please as well ?

What are the small insignias visible above the Farrier's one, and between the crown and rank ones for the other man ?

Cheers,

JD

The farrier sergeant's insignia in 3 chevrons, horseshoe above and gun above that.
The chap on the left is 3 chevrons, gun above, then crown above.
Is that Battery Sergeant Major? Must check my rank insignia...... :)

The "gun" was (and still is) worn above the chevrons by all Artillery Sergeants and under the rank badge by the Senior NCOs (later Warrant Officers).
