Artillery Advice/Research

Postby Op-Ack » 28 Oct 2008 18:12

Having discussed this with Mark, I am prepared to offer my assistance to any member who requires assistance with all things Royal Artillery.

I am fortunate to live within cannon shot of the Regimental Museum and have ready access to the archives.

Please bear in mind though that I am still working full time, so queries will be dealt with at the earliest opportunity.

Hi Phil

Thank you very much for offering your services to forum members, very kind indeed.

I have a Victorian Long Service Medal to an NCO who was in the Royal Artillery. When I can dig the medal out I'll let you know his details.

Mark :)

Hi Phil,

Many thanks for this kind offer - I always find the RA owners of my swords particularly hard to research due to the lack of detailed individual unit (battery/troop) histories coupled with the fact that the gunners literally were "Ubique"! The archives are a priceless resource for researchers.

Regards,

John

Phil:

Any chance you could inquire as to how long the RA continued to use the Dundas pattern sword? I know it was in use up through the Crimean war, but when did its use come to an end? If there's any info available on the various forms it took, I also be interested in that.

Many thanks in advance,

Mark

Thank you for your generous offer!

My gt grandfather was a bombardier during the period approx 1886 - 1891; in all the records I've found for him, he was in London - except for the birth of his son in 1889 in Conventry. I can only think that he was posted there by the army. So what was the Royal Artillery doing in Coventry in 1889?

Thank you.
My brain is now full. Any new information pushes something old out. I don't think I've lost anything important, but how would I know?
