Postby robsal » 18 May 2012 16:15

I'm new to this list so hello to all.

I wonder if anyone can help? my 2nd GGrandfather George NASH(Private 1230) joined the 61st Regiment in Sep 1839 at Salisbury and l have located George on the 1841 Census at Woolwich barracks but nothing after this until 1861 when he appears with wife and daughter in Pembroke dock, were the 61st regiment overseas at the time of the 1851 census?

Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi Robert

The 61st Foot were in India in 1851 (having arrived in 1845) not returning home until 1860. During their time in India they fought in both the Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1848-49 and the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58. This all fits in nicely with your research so far.

Hi Robert

The FIBIS Fibiwiki page "61st Regiment of Foot"

includes the link “The 61st Foot in India 1845 – 1860” from an archived section of the “Glorious Glosters” website

Hi Robert

He is on the Punjab Medal Roll, and is shown as being entitled to both the Chillianwala and Goojerat battle clasps, the roll notes that he was wounded in both battles. He is also present on the Indian Mutiny Medal Roll shown as engaged in the capture of Delhi, again the roll notes that he embarked for England on 3 May 1858.
