Marking on Pattern 1882 ammo pouch

Postby Strongbow » 20 Apr 2012 03:42

I recently acquired a pretty nice Pattern 1882 ammo pouch. On the inside of the flap, it is marked 5th (GH) VBHLI. Would I be cirrect in assuming this is 5th (Gordon Highlanders) Volunteer Battion Highland LIght Infantry? If so, that would rock, as I have an HLI-marked Pattern 1882 waist belt.

Nearly right, it is in fact the 5th (Glasgow Highland) Volunteer Btn. Highland Light Infantry. Raised in 1868 as the 105th Lanarkshire (Glasgow Highland) Rifle Vols., and uniformed as the 42nd Highlanders with white sporrans sporting three black tails, red and black diced hose and glengarries with blackcock's feathers. Became the 5th VB HLI in 1887. Trooper

Sounds like a good find strongbow!

Is the pouch of buff leather or brown leather? Could you share a pic with us? I only ask as I have two sets of valise equipment in brown leather ( with '88, and '82 pouches) and both are marked to vols. The '88 set is marked to what appears to be the 5th Lanarkshire!

Thanks,

Thanks for the info guys! Very helpful.

It's buff. I'm on business travel until Monday. When I get home, I'll post up some pics. It's in very nice condition. A bit stiff, but quite sound, with some remnants of whiting/Blanco on it.
