Fenian Raids Questions 1866 and 1870

Postby northshore » 15 Feb 2012 04:55

Hello, I just introduced my self under the New Member Section but i have a couple of questions that may better be asked in this forum. I have two Canada General Service medals. One is for the Fenian Raid, 1866, awarded to Private A. Farrell Beauharnois of the "Inf. COY". Can anyone tell me if this person is on the medla rolls and what COY means?

Also I have a Fenian Raid medal from 1870 awarded to D.E. Tees of the 3rd Victoria Volunterr Rifles. Can anyone confirm that he is on the medal rolls for this medal and any other information you might be able to give me? Many thanks. MH

To answer your first question COY stands for Company.......

Infantry Company

There is an Alphonse Farrell on the roll for the 1866...... He did not get his medal till June 9th, 1915......

There is a David C. Tees with an 1870 medal on the roll......

Hi,

I found a Fenian Raid 1866 medal mixed in with some stuff from my grandparents. I would like to find out more about the man on the medal so I can find out how I'm related but I can't find the right match at Archives Canada. I was hoping you could help.
The name is Sgt. R. Elliott Albion I.Co.

Thank you, Sara

Sara,

You won't find out much about him at the Archives, at least not in the military section. He should apprear on the medal roll and on the unit paylists for the period. There are no service records that I am aware of. Your best bet would be to look at the various census records and follow him through the years and, hopefully, tie him to a relative that you have already identified. By the way, where was the Albion Infantry Company located? Good luck.

All the best,

Gary

Hi Gary, thanks for the quick response!

Thanks, I'll do some more digging. My grandparents were from Ontario so I can only guess the Company was maybe in Upper Canada?

Cheers, Sara

Sara,

Albion seems to be a "dispersed" village (i.e. it no longer exists) that was located to the south-east of Orangeville, Ontario. So, your hunch was correct. If you read through this book (http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/19599), you should find some mention of this unit. Good luck in your research.

All the best,

Gary

Thanks guys,
I'll keep looking and let you know what I find. I'm going to see what I can find in our family records that will help track down more info.

Thanks again, Sara

Hi There,

Has anyone got a copy of the Canada General Service Medal Roll 1866-1870.

I had a copy some years ago, got the details that I needed for my research and then sold the book on.

Details have now been eaten by our new puppy! :x Grrrrrrr.

I can still read some details of the two Neale's that were in the 1st Batt. Rifle Brigade page 45/48.......but the rest of the information relating to the other Neale family members are well and truely shredded.

So if someone has the odd copy, is there any chance of a look up please?

I would be interested an any of the other Neale family members that appear in the above mentioned book.

If at all possible a scan of those pages would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Chris.

Hi

I wonder if anybody can help. I have a Canadian General Service Medal to Sgt J., Berlangett of Packenham Rifle Company. The medal has two loose Clasps for both Fenian Raids. Whist I can see that the recipient was entitled to the medal from on line sources I cannot obtain a copy of the medal roll book to check clasp entitlement. I wondered if anybody could help me.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael, He is confirmed on the roll and recieved the Fenian Raid 1866 Clasp whilst with the Pakenham Rifles and the Fenian Raid 1870 Clasp for service with the 41st Battalion.

He is listed as 1 of 25 men awarded the medal.

I have noted this medal previously:

Is there any research or links that anyone knows about regarding the correct type or style of lettering used in the award naming of the CGSM?

A great book entitled "RIDGEWAY" by Peter Vronsky is out. Very easy to read and has a great summary of events leading up to, including and Post 1866 Fenian Raids.

Anyone looking to learn more I STRONGLY recommend this book.

Neale, Here are some pictures that may help you. Note the first one is an example of late naming.
