His Militia Attestation papers are available on Find My Past. He was from my hometown of Sheffield and was born 1879. Not much else but a description etc (usual attestation stuff). You should be able to trace his regiments movements through ORBATS.

Hello Saw119

How do you connect the WO96 papers for 5274 Joseph Etherington with 5856 J Etherington?

There is nothing on the papers to say this man enlisted in the regulars (and it is not always entered) - but what other evidence is there to connect the two men?

Looks like my mistake as I saw the correct name, correct regiment, right timeframe but it's only a 'similar' number. Do you have the J Etheringotn from Sheffield on the medal roll? It could be possible that the number is wrong. It does seem quite a coincidence to have two men with the 'same' name enlisted in the same regiment at the same time. If I've led you on a wild goose chase then I apologise.

No need to apologise.

Such coincidences are common.

They may be the same man, but as of yet there is no proof.
