Mathew H ANDERSON, RE Crimea, India, d1878 Gibraltar

Postby Erica1 » 04 Apr 2012 08:36

Hallo everyone,

I am a newbie to this forum but I wonder if someone who has access to the Crimean war medal roll could check for me?

I am looking for the whereabouts of Mathew H Anderson (Royal Engineers regiment number 4159) prior to 1857. Royal Engineer paylists note that he was transferred from the 4th company to the 11th company Royal Engineers in India in October / November 1857. At that time he was a 2nd Corporal, but presumably was a private / sapper before that.

I think the 4th Company were in the Crimea before 1857 and I would be interested in learning whether Mathew appears on the medal rolls. His service record is not available at Kew as Mathew (then Sergeant) died in Gibraltar in 1878. He is my great great grandfather.

Many thanks,

Erica

Hi everyone,

Sorry, the Royal Engineers were the Royal Sappers and Miners before Oct 1856.

Thanks,

Erica

Sorry, but I could not find him on the Crimea Medal Roll, however, he is on the Indian Mutiny Medal Roll with the 'Central India' clasp.

Hallo Martin,

Thank you that information is actually very useful as that would indicate that he was attached to the 4th after Sebastopol. I think from his regiment number and that information that he must have joined the RE around 1855 or 1856 or was in training in England.

I knew he was on the Indian Mutiny roll with a Central India clasp. He was part of the Rajpootana Field Force at the Siege of Kotah. He subsequently spent much of 1858 chasing Tantia Tope around the area south of Jaipur.

Many thanks. You have helped.
