10th Railway Company R.E. Suakin 1885

Does anyone know what date 10th railway Company R.E. left Suakin in 1885. I know they arrived there on April 6th and disembarked from the steamer Kinsembo at 05:00hrs on April 7th. But I have no information as to when they left, although I do know they were still working on 1st June. The Official History does not given withdrawl dates nor does Sandes.

I have a snippet, but nothing definite from 'History of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. IV', by Brig-Gen W. Baker Brown, pub. Institute of Royal Engineers, page 264, under the heading 'Railway Branch'...

“A second company, the 10th, was formed in 1886 (sic) in connexion (again sic) with the proposed construction of a railway from Suakin to Berber. An account of the work of these companies is given in volume II, Part I, Chapter XXVI and Part II, Chapter III.”

1886 is obviously a typo.

I'd look in the referred volumes. While I have Vol. IV, I don't have the others.

Check out Brian Robson's book, the title of which escapes me, he did provide quite detailed arrival and departure times for the campaign

Hello Julian and Roconn;

Just had a quick look at Robson's Fuzzy-Wuzzy and I'm afraid there is no mention of a departure date for the 10th Coy, RE. He does mention that Wolsely ordered an immediate cessation of all railroad work before he left Suakin on 18 May so any subsequent work by the RE's should simply have been rear party duties and " clean-up, " I would imagine.

Sorry I couldn't have found the answer but will keep looking.
