Lance Cpl J HOWARD, 2/11th Regiment Afghanistan 1878-80

I'm new to this fascinating board having found it while trying to dig up information on Lance Corporal J. Howard, a distant relative who served in Afghanistan at some point during 1878 - 1880 in the 2nd Division 11th Regiment.

I found the service medal while clearing out some old family relics and thought it would be interesting to find out who he was, if possible. My middle name is Howard in recognition of that families involvement with the James family by marriage. The Howard family were originally from Devon but not sure which part.

There are also a number of "abstinence" medals in the relics box, most of those from India from the James side of the family. It is interesting to note that rewarding abstemious behaviour was considered necessary.

If anybody has information about J. Howard it would be appreciated.

The "abstinence" medals are also interesting and I suspect that they will be from the Soldiers Total Abstinence Association founded in 1862. This became the Army Temperence Association India in 1888 when Lord Roberts persuaded various religious and regimental bodies to combine their efforts against the demon drink. Later it became the Royal Army temperence Association and continued to operate until 1924 in India and 1939 at home. I would be interested in a description of the medals. There are collectors out there and they do have a value. King Edward VII, not known for his abstinence in various matters, granted the royal prefix in 1902.

Hi Paul
The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page “Temperance organisations” which includes some information about temperance medals awarded in India.
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=T ... anisations

It includes a link which gives details of the book A Guide to Military Temperance Medals of the British Army and Royal Navy by David A. Harris. The book includes chapters on the Army Temperance Association India (ATAI), the Royal Army Temperance Association: India/Home (RATA) and the Indian Army Temperance Association http://www.stewartbooks.com/Temperance_Medal.htm

Many thanks for all of your responses, apologies for not replying sooner to acknowledge them.

Some interesting facts there, it must have been pretty horrendous for those who went through it at the time!

Hi Martin,

Just took another look at the medal and it does say 928 with the other info on the outer edge.
