J PERRY, Sherwood Foresters India 1885 + Egypt?

Postby bmf974 » 08 Feb 2012 21:01

Hi Everyone,

I am currently helping a friend with some family research and have been shown a letter written by a Joel Perry on 31st July 1885 from the Dilkoosha cantonment outside Lucknow India and a photograph of a private in the sherwood foresters believed to be the same individual, he would seem to be wearing the Egypt medal with no bar and the khedive star.

At this stage I think that he must have served with the 2nd battalion in the Sudan then moved to India. There issue no details of further service as yet.

Any ideas suggestions welcome to this unraveling story welcome If someone could confirm the entitlement to the medals that would also be most useful.

Thanks

According to the North East Medals website: (http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britis ... giment.htm) qualifying members of the 2nd Battalion of the Derbyshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) were entitled to both medals.

However, it seems that they were not in the theatre of operations for very long before moving to India without seeing action and thus no clasps were awarded:

1881.07.01 2nd Battalion, The Derbyshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters)
1881 England: Aldershot
1882.01 Gibraltar
1882.07 Egypt
1882.10 India: Lucknow

The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page "95th Regiment of Foot", the previous name for the 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=9 ... nt_of_Foot

The link for Regiments.org shows that the Regiment went from Egypt to India in 1882 and remained there until 1898
1882.07 Egypt
1882.10 India: Lucknow
1888 Sikkim
1888 India: Lucknow
<1892> India: Umballa
<1894> Solon
<1897> Sitapore
1897.06 Tirah
1898.04 Sittapore
1898 Aden

The FIBIS Fibiwiki also has pages on the Sikkim Expedition 1888 and the Tirah Campaign 1897-98
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=S ... ition_1888
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=T ... gn_1897-98

If Joel Perry did not die in service there may be a record in the WO 97 records from the National Archives, available online on FindMyPast. (pay site) Details in the FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Army, section Records

Hi

There is a Joel Perry, Regt. No. 2147, on the medal roll for the 1882 Egyptian Medal, serving with the 2nd Batt. Derbyshire Regt.
