British Cavalry Sword Mod 1821.

Postby MarcoL. » 15 Jan 2012 22:18

Hello, I would like to ask you about this sword. I found this sword from a old collector. I recognized this sword like "british 1821 cavalry sword". Sword Marked "Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London". Lenght of the sword without scabbard is 104 cm.

Could anyone help me to recognize the heraldic symbol on the blade? Could anyone help me understand the period of this sword?
The same symbol appears in the form of wax stamp.
Best Regards and thanks
Marco

Hi Marco,

You're right; tyhis does seem to be based on the British 1821 Pattern sword for Light Cavalry. If there is a serial number on the back edge of the blade, then Richard Milner at http://www.armsresearch.co.uk could possibly help you trace the original purchaser. This looks to be a variation on the British pattern made for a foreign officer, but I don't recognise the crest on the blade.

Kind regards,

John

There is a chance that these are arms and crest for the surname Maillard. Robert Thirkill Maillard of the 16th Lancers might be a good fit based on the sword pattern. Of course you will want to confirm this with a copy of the Wilkinson proof entry as John pointed out. :)

Thanks for the replies! Another question: What kind of knot and pendants mounts the saber?
