Hi Everyone nice to be apart of a big team of like minded folks. What got me on to this site was a member posted some time back that they have a weapon "pistol" that was stamped John Francis Upton Gaskell. He was 6th Dragoons in 1871 then for what ever reason resigned but re-emerged in the 2nd Dragoons "Scotts Greys " as a Capt, resigning his commision for a final time 1881 ish.
My point is I have just purchased a sword Made by Wilkinson dated 1871 that belonged to this Gent carrying his initials, Coat of Arms and Motto.Further more found a portriat of Gaskell in 6th Dragoon Uniform carrying this very sword. Thought the person who made the first post about the pistol would be interested to know this. Any one out there know who that was ?????? The post may have been 2008/2009.

Thanks for the welcome its appriciated .Real name is Keith been collecting Edged weapons for just 3 years now. I try to collect quality rather than quantity having only 7 pieces to date.Gladly share all seven with those interested. I noticed there are albums of peoples individual collections perhaps I need to do that. Main areas of collection are well etched with Owners initials,family motto's and crest's then I enjoy identifying and researching the individual. Collection includes : 1796P Heavy Cavalry Officers Sabre with the early "ladder" hilt, a 1796P Osborn Light Cavalry Officers Sabre nicely etched, both these have the pre 1801 coat of arms. All the others are Victorian, a 1854P Coldstream Guards Sword which is married to a "Andria Farara" blade probably past down father to son to son,1821P Wilkinson Light Cavalry Sword numbered just 5005 with Patent Solid Hilt in beautiful condition,that belonged to Lord Walter Charles montagu Douglas Scott of the 15th Hussars :An 1857P Wilkinson R.E. Sword numbered 12989 again well etched belonged to Colonel Stanier Waller OBE lots of great history on this chap, he ended up Mayor of Oxford in 1919 when aged 74 !!! Continueing on and hope I've not bored you all : Two lovely Mamelukes,one a beautifully etched early Victorian 1837 /1842 Cavalry Dress Sabre the other a Wilkinson 1831P General & Staff Officers Sabre numbered 32956 that belonged to Major General Sir Leopald Victor Swaine of the Rifle Brigade. Latest edition was to be the heavey Cavalry sword, but I returned that "it was too refurbished on inspection" so now have coming a Wilkinson Navel Sword that belonged to Claude Preston Buckle.

When I first started collecting I did not have very much focus. A few years ago I bought my first Wilkinson and was bitten by the research bug. I have been collecting Victorian swords since then, with a heavy emphasis on provenance. Over the years my collection has become smaller, but better quality.

As John (swordcollector1) said, there are a number of sword collectors on the forum so I think you will enjoy your time here. You may want to take a look at some of the swords displayed in the collector showcases. You may even want to start a showcase of your own. I know I'd love to see your swords!

Sounds like a great collection, Keith! Like Jonathan, I was very indiscriminate when I started collecting in 1997, and it's taken a few years to gradually sell off the unwanted pieces and use the funds to acquire fewer, better examples. If you do create one, remember that the showcase is for your Victorian swords rather than the earlier stuff, though all your pieces sound good!

We are currently discussing a very early (probably pre-1854) Wilkinson Patent Solid Hilt at Sword Forum International and photos of your sword might answer some questions for us!

Hello Jonathan. Sry for this delay in replying not been watching my posts recently. Would gladly put some pictures of the said sword on the Forum if there is still an interest. I have not read the link you posted just yet but will do. Is it pictures of the whole sword required or in particular the hilt.

Hello Jonathan and all.

Here are some pictures of the 1821P Wilkinson Light Cavalry Sword with the serial number 5005 made in 1854 for Lord Walter Charles Montagu Douglas Scott who became a Lieutenant in the 15th Hussars in November 1854 when this sword was purchased.It's blade is just under 36 inches in length and still retains all it's original polish.
It has the Wilkinson patent Solid Hilt with words to that effect etched on the blade, and the proof button is not standard, but more fancy than the normal design.
The family are today Still "Dukes of Buccleuch", and have their residents at Drumlanrig Castle, Thornhill Dumfrieshire Scotland.

That is an incredibly beautiful sword! Not only does it have wonderful provenance, but it is in immaculate condition. Thank you very much for the photos. John (swordcollector1) is quite right, Gordon (acanthus) will be very excited to see this sword and will no doubt chime in here or contact you privately. He has recently published an excellent article about a similar early P1821 LC patent solid hilt sword which belonged to John Forbes of the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry.

I am off to Google Walter Charles Montagu Douglas Scott to learn a bit more about him!
