Many thanks for allowing me to join this forum,
I was given the forum details after having a question
re-good conduct badges.
My main areas of interest are the Crimean, Indian Mutiny,
and Boer War, as I had two ancestors who for in those campains
I was recently able via findmypast to get a service record for one
and medal entitlement for the other, it was the service record which
mentioned the GCbadges.

Hello, my name is Peter.
I have been researching the life of Charles Thomas Kennedy VC - a private in the Highland Light Infantry during the Second Boer War. I also discovered two great-great uncles who were involved in the seige of Ladysmith - one defending and one relieving.
Hopefully my biography of Charles Kennedy is to be published in the next Victoria Cross Society Journal.
At the moment I am trying to get the incorrect birth details on the headstone (North Merchiston Cemetery, Edinburgh) and the memorial bench plaque (Grassmarket, Edinburgh) for Charles corrected.
Any suggestions?

Hi Mark,
I am very new to this very interesting Forum. I have a scanned photo in my computer of an unknown couple, possibly relatives, taken sometime in the late 19th century. The man is uniform and I am trying to identify whether it is an army or police uniform.
I would like to post it on the Forum (as an attachment) but was not able to do this. I looked at the FAQ but still didnt know how to attach the photo - please help!

After speaking with the museum curator of his regiment, the Cheshires, it was concluded that he may have been a victim of accidental death as there was no record of him being in the regimental hospital. I found this unsettling as he wrote in his final letter home that he didn't think he would be seeing England again. As he was a young man of 26 and an experienced soldier, this struck me as worth looking into. I wonder if others have found the same thing or can shed any light on this type of "accident"?

Are you sure that you ancestor died at Hyderabad?
It appears more likely that the place was Hazaribagh, where the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment was stationed in 1874. This was such an unhealthy location, with numerous deaths from enteric fever, that most of the troops were withdrawn from there in 1874.

If it was an unhealthy location in 1874, it is very likely that the same conditions applied in 1873. My guess is that your ancestor died from disease also. Just because there are no hospital records for him doesn’t mean that he died of an accident. Even if there are good hospital records, (and if there are, this must be one of the few regiments which has them) he may have died so quickly he didn’t get to hospital. If he said in his last letter home that he didn't think he would be seeing England again, it sounds as though people were dying all around him.

As an example of the rapidity of death, this link, recently given in another post on this Forum, documents a cholera outbreak in the 43rd Regiment of Foot in 1857

Have you tried to obtain a burial record? Refer the FIBIS Fibiwiki page IGI for details of the Family Search site, and the page Chaplains Returns for details of the Army deaths records. If you can find a record, order a copy of the original, which will most likely have the cause of death

My name is Phile Young. I've got to find this website while surfing on the internet. I am interested in the Anglo-Sudan wars because I am translating the book of Michael Asher, Khartoum. I want to introduce good pieces of military history to Korean readers.

I was in Sudan for two years, 2006-2008 as UN military observer. Since then, I've got to be interested in the wars as well as the history of the Sudan. It naturally leads to the Victorian things such as units history, campaigns and weapon system.

I am looking for pictures and sketches that might be included in my future book. I welcome anything.

Hi, Mark,

I recently inherited two photo albums filled with scores of photos of unidentified ancestors and am attempting the arduous task of identifying them. One of the men is wearing a rather plain-looking uniform and I would like some help identifying it. I'm not sure if it's military as I can't find anything similar online. My great-grandparents owned and operated a grocery/newsagent/post office in Surrey so this may even be a postal uniform. This ancestor is most likely from Hampshire, Norfolk or Surrey. Some of my ancestors also emigrated to Canada and the U.S. beginning in late 1800s so that is a possibility as well. Where would be the best section to post this? I'm new to your pages.

Hello all,
I'm new to the forum. My interest is really in family history, but several ancestors and other connections served in the army in the 19th century and as I know very little about military history I thought I'd join, to help find out more about them, where they fought (mainly India, the East Indies and Afghanistan) and what conditions would have been like for them.

I've posted a request for help in identifying a uniform (cavalry, I think) on another part of the forum. I'm looking forward to learning more!
