19th Century Tailoring - Nancy Beardall

Postby Hillebrandt » 18 Aug 2011 18:51

Having been a promoter of Nancy's replica uniform service on this forum in the past, I regret that I am currently having problems with the return of some work that was sent to her for finishing. It's getting close to three months since I received any reply to e-mails and telephone calls go straight to voicemail.

I have searched online to find out whether the company has ceased trading but not found anything. Has anyone had any recent dealings?

A supplier of Napoleonic uniforms that I have been mailing has also been trying to contact her recently but to no avail. I would have thought that being "in the trade" he may have heard something.

If anyone does have any recent news of this company I would be very pleased to hear of it.

Hello,

I'm sorry I can't be of help to you, though I will keep an ear out for word. Sorry to hear there's grief, thats never a pleasant experience especially when all it takes is a quick email in response to you saying 'Yes its next....' would allay any fears.

I hope it turns out well, please keep us posted as to the result.

Several months ago I sent a via paypal, full payment for a pair of modern Genadier Guards officer pants.
Well....of course no pants and no response to my emails. Who can afford to be ripped off like this! I have seen this happen many times before in the "reenacting" world with these cottage industry type outfits!

What a fool I was thinking "oh it's from the UK, they must be honorable".
Well to be honest, I have purchased 2 other uniforms from the Sutler Stores that arrived without incident.
I should have been more cautious after I found out what happened to the Sutler Stores!

If anyone has any updates on the situation, please let me know.

Hello,

Within a particular time frame, you can lodge a claim via Paypal for refund of non-supplied goods, but I'm guessing you've already crossed that bridge so forgive me if I'm re-hashing something you've already done.

Outside that time frame, you can still lodge a complaint via Paypal and they'll note it against the traders name. You won't get your money back but there's a slight warm & fuzzy feeling that you've made a point.

I don't know if I'd tar an entire nation with the same ethics as a rogue dealer but I understand your frustration. Still, there are many Australian dealers that many naturally assume will know a Boer War era slouch hat from a Vietnam era one that I wouldn't buy a Yankees ballcap from so I understand what you're saying.

For my own money, I've been burnt a few times and posted one traders name here as a result. He's come through since and I applaud his ethics, and it seems there are others since that have had an entirely different experience than mine but I tend to deal closer to home now other than known people like The RQM who's a member here. (Stan....you need to put me on commission).

It almost seems a gamble now dealing via the internet, I do wish you luck. Money is hard enough to earn without donating it to those who don't wish to meet your expectations.

Robert,
Name your price!
As a "vendor" my main problem is trying to please too many people at once. I end-up taking too many orders and then have to play catch-up. I do this as part of "my hobby", and have a full-time job and family, and sometimes it's hard to keep up. I don't think I'll ever recover the costs of my research material, but I enjoy doing it.
It's funny the item at issue is a pair of blue wool trousers as I am struggling making a pair myself. In fact, I need to update the poor fellow who is waiting right now.
Cheers
Stan

Hi, I too have orders outstanding and was a little anxious at having no news, but I have managed to contact Nancy's husband and am reassured that there's nothing sinister going on just massive pressure of work. It seems that Nancy is working flat out six days a week on orders and has little time for admin. Not ideal I know but knowing how good the finished garments are, I am prepared to wait a little longer for quality and I wouldn't want her to become Ill by working too hard. I'm assured all orders will be honored even if they are a bit late. I hope you'll agree that we need to be a little patient in order to enable Nancy to continue her valuable service to us all.
All the best, Frenchstickmick.

Further to my last post re. 19th Century Tailoring, I have now received all the items I ordered and they are great! Well worth the wait and fantastic value so I am very happy and would recommend the company if you're prepared to wait awhile. Just proves that a little patience pays off sometime, hope everyone else who's waiting has the same result. Happy New Year.

I am pleased to hear that Nancy has completed your order. At least it shows that she is still around!

I have been waiting for the courtesy of a response from her since last May. She has embroidery that I have paid another company for in order to complete my uniform and I have sent several e-mails and letters and left countless voicemail messages requesting that the goods be sent to me. How patient do you have to be in this market? :x

I guess you tend to lose patience, you shop around and you let others know your experience. We're a small & fussy market, words get around fairly quickly.

I find my self in the same position with 19 C Tailoring, a uniform was ordered Aug 28th and I was told a 16wk delivery.
Now after many unanswered inquiries as to their status, I find Paypal will not help.
I have some small comfort to know that this is not uncommon and the company is still in business, but it's not good business practice. Wish I'd have found this forum earlier.

Hello Frenchstickmick,

Could you please respond to my PM that I sent a couple of weeks ago?

Many thanks,
