98th Foot in the 2nd Sikh War

Postby Mark » 17 Jul 2008 22:15

Hi all

Although I collect to the Staffordshire Regiments I am still fairly new to the 98th Foot (having been mainly a 38th and 80th collector).

Can anyone tell me what the 98th Foot was up to during the Second-Sikh War? I am aware they received the Punjab Medal for this campaign but without clasps - with only a small handful of exceptions. What exactly did they do if they were not present at any of the major actions that earned a clasp?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jon

Since making that post some years back I have found that they were not directly involved in the campaign nor did they see any action. They did, however, act as armed escorts (for who escapes me at the moment) - hence the medal but no clasps. Interestingly they were still awarded the battle honour "PUNJAB".

Hi Mark

The 98th wasnt involved in any of the major engagements during the 2nd Sikh war, but the flank companies provided an escort for the governor general.
at the same time the remainder of the regt protected a large treasure convoy to lahore.
For this the regt was recognised with the award of the battle honour PUNJAUB 1849.
