Maiwand Day

For all discussions relating to the First and Second Afghan Wars of 1839-42 and 1878-80.

Maiwand Day

Postby Garen » 27 Jul 2011 10:30

I wasn't sure if I should put this in the wargaming section of the forum, but decided to put it here as I think the following piece has a wider interest.

Today is the 131st anniversary of the battle of Maiwand - 27 July 1880 - and to mark the occasion I have published an interview with Ethan Reiff who, last year, decided to re-enact Maiwand as a tabletop wargame. He did a lot of research and went into incredible detail, so I hope you will find it of interest, including some wonderful photographs:

Hello Garen
Thank you for the article - it was most interesting and it obvious that your interviewee certainly has a passion for Maiwand.

I celebrated the day in style - had superb luncheon at an Indian establishment in Central London, quite near Baker Street where a certain doctor by the name of John Watson shared rooms with a well known detective. Watson of course served with the 66th at Maiwand and was wounded  - with a couple of like minded friends and we toasted absent friends and 'The Heroes of Maiwand'.

It was good to get out as I do not do so much these days. My health is not what it should be and I have had to give up many activities.
They should have died in their own loved land.
With friends and kinsmen near them.
Not withered thus on a foreign strand,
With no thought, save heaven to cheer them.

Thank you, Mark; thank you, Richard.

Richard, all my best with your health issues, I certainly hope they are temporary - don't like to think of you having to slow down!

All my best - Garen.
