55th and 88th Foot

For all discussions relating to the Seventh, Eigth and Nineth Cape Frontier Wars fought between 1846 and 1878.

55th and 88th Foot

Hi Can any one tell me where I can get information about battles that 55th and 88th Foot took part in, between 1854 and 1875.
Trying to trace my 3 x G Grandfather Michael Fitzpatrick. I understand he was court marshaled twice!

Thanks littlenanny58,

I am assuming that you are referring to battles in South Africa, since you have posted your enquiry here. In fact, there was no warfare at the Cape of Good Hope between 1853, when the Eighth Frontier War ended, and 1877 when the the Ninth, and last, began. The period was largely dominated by the Great Cattle Killing of 1856-57 and it took a generation for the Xhosa people to recover. In any case, I am not sure that your regiments served in South Africa during that period.

From 54-56 the 88th was on-duty with the Eastern Army and served in the Crimea. In 57 the 88th went to India in the wake of the Mutiny. In 59 the 88th posted to Delhi and remained there until returning to England in 1870. From 1870 to 1877 the 88th was posted variously in England and Ireland and did not ship to South Africa until 1877.
