Swords: Royal Scots Fusiliers cross hilt broadsword

HI!

I am still abroad, so I can not take any photos of the 66th Berks. FS Scabbard as I promised ...

However, in the meantime here are the photos from my Royal Scots Fusiliers Victorian Cross Hilt Broadsword with FS scabbard, which I purchased a couple of years ago From Michael D. Long.

While the blade is in nice original condition, I believe the grip and crossguard have been refurbished.
the FS scabbard is also in good condition for its age, just "spolied" bt a small dent as shown in the pics.
I generally wear this when re-enacting as Gordon Highlanders Officer of the Boer War Era.

Nice sword - the cross-hilt is one of my favourite patterns. I'd agree that the crossguard looks very shiny for an original, and the grip material appears to be leather instead of sharkskin. While I have seen period replacements in leather (usually in swords with Indian connections - I think there must be some bug out there that likes to eat fishskin!), I think from the good condition of your grip that it's more likely to be a modern replacement. The extremely white leather washer at the base of the blade is also a trademark of MD Long swords! However, for re-enactment purposes you would certainly want something that looked like it had just been made, not a 100-year old antique, so I wouldn't worry about that at all.
