LETTERS FROM PERSIA AND INDIA 1857-59 | General Barker GCB

Postby hodekin » 30 Nov 2008 13:28

To whom it may concern,

I have in my possession an old book (1915 edition) titled:

Letters from Persia and India 1857-1859

They are basically the memoirs of General Sir George Digby Barker G.C.B.
In it, he recounts his experiences of the Persian War and Indian Mutiny.

It appears he started Army life with the 78th Highland Regiment, but also serving with the 19th and then the 64th. He ended his military career as Colonel of the Seaforth Highlanders.

I have not yet read the book in it's entirety, but if there are any points that fellow members would like me to search out, I’d be only too pleased to do so.

Cheers,

Ken.

Dear Ken

I was browsing whilst doing a geneology study into relatives of my husband, General Sir George Digby Barker is his great-great uncle, half brother of his great grandmother Anna Louisa. I was not aware that such a book existed and am wondering if you could tell me whether it is still available to buy. I have so many questions but could you tell me whether it gives any of his family history ie about his brother Walter Julius or his parents John Barker and Georgiana Weston?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Hello Joulia - just saw your message and did a quick check on Abe Books where there is a copy available (link). It does look as though a handful of the bigger libraries hold it too (link).

It doesn't seem to have made it to one of the print-on-demand outfits yet, where old books become widely available again, but prone to falling apart after a couple of weeks of handling! (Owning and handling the original books is a pleasure all of its own. The downside... they can be expensive.)

Dear Ken,

I am particularly interested in any information regarding the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry during the Persian War and also the Indian Mutiny; in particular, any reference to John Forbes who served with the 3rd BLC in both campaigns.

Regards,

Gordon

Ken,

Any mention of the Land Transport Corps during the Persian campaign or the Military Train during the Mutiny?

All the best,

Gary

Hi Ken,

Just a follow-up; did you manage to find anything on the John Forbes or the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry in your "Letters from Persia and India"?
