80th Regiment of Foot

For all discussions relating to the First and Second Anglo-Sikh Wars of 1845-46 and 1848-49.

80th Regiment of Foot

Postby Mark » 11 Nov 2007 15:22

Does anyone know if the 80th Regiment of Foot were involved in both the First AND Second Sikh Wars or just one of them?

I believe the Regiment may have only been entitled to the Sutlej Medal BUT NOT the Punjab Medal (or vice-versa).

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

I came across this history of the 80th which indicates they obtained three battle honours in the First Sikh War but there is no mention of the Second War.

Hope that helps.

Hi Ian

Cheers for the link, I think you are correct in saying they were only involved in the First Sikh War and not the second. I have just bought one of Robert Hope's books on the 80th and there is no mention of them being involved.

Having posted this thread almost three years ago I have since done much more research into the 38th and 80th Regiments of Foot

The 80th was involved in the First Sikh War but neither regiment took part in the Second. However, another Staffordshire regiment - the 98th - did take part in the Second campaign.
