Photographic Albums - The Serving Soldier

Postby FROGSMILE » 27 May 2012 19:53

I stumbled upon this link from King's College London that focuses upon a number of Victorian campaigns via photographic albums of contemporary soldiers/officers. It is particularly interesting in that it shows officers and men in many informal situations and so displays in an unvarnished way how the troops looked: http://kingscollections.org/servingsold ... php?id=423

I hope that it is of interest to forum members. Particular campaigns shown include the Tirah and the 2nd Anglo/Boer War.

Thanks for the link, FROGSMILE! I found the Tirah photos particulary interesting. Working through the Boer War ones next.

As an aside I am interested in seeing any Tirah campaign photos that depict men of the Derbyshire Regiment.

I think that forum member Albert J will find the Anglo/Boer War photos of particular interest vis-a-vis his interest in the khaki field uniforms that were worn at that time.

Mark - have you seen The Frontier Ablaze - The North West Frontier Rising 1897-98 by Michael Barthorp - first published in 1996 - there are plenty of photos of the Derbyshire Regt in this book.

Frogsmile - thanks for the link.
