Lieut D M H FARRINGTON, 63rd Foot d1880 en route Afghan War

Postby GRAZ » 25 Jul 2010 00:25

Hi All
I was offered a sword today, it has a Wilkinson Sword blade and has been identified as being owned by LIEUTENANT DOUGLAS MC.CLOUD HUNTER FARRINGTON of the 63rd Regiment. Lieutenant Farrington died on his way with his regiment to take part in the 2nd Afghan war. Can anybody tell me if he was entitled to an Afghan medal.
Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The 63rd Foot (Manchester Regt) did not serve as a unit in the 2nd Afghan War. However a few men did serve and some received 4 bar medals. It is possible they were employed as signallers or in some other way. The casualty list does not show any casualties for the 63rd. You would need to consult the medal roll and I am sure members of this forum have access to it.

Thanks for the info Heliwest, it's much appreciated.
I've done a bit of research on Farrington, and found that he died while with his regiment on the way to fight in Afghanistan. He got as far as Sukkur ( i believe it's in Pakistan ), and was sent back to Karachi sick. He died two days later on 3rd September 1880.
He didn't have much of a military career, poor chap, May 1878 - September 1880.

Just looked up in the roll for 63rd and I'm afraid Lieut Farrington isn't there

Thanks for checking Odin.
I'm not surprised he wasn't entitled to a medal, as he didn't cross the Afghanistan border.
