Hi,
I noticed your query, maybe this info will help.
Bell was a Naval Cadet in 1857, a sub-lieutenant 20 March 1864 and a Lieutenant in 21 April 1866
War Service - served in the Abyssinian campaign 1868 (Abyssinian Medal)
In the Navy List 1869 he is shown on HMS Brisk joined 7 September 1866

Gerald:

Thanks for that. The Abyssinian campaign is new information; there's no mention of it in his service record. Can I ask what your source is for that reference?

Sorry about the delay in confirming the information which I posted originally.

I agree that references are very important.

The reference I relied on was the "The Royal Navy List, July 1881 published by Witherby & Co., High Holborn, London.

Page 11 Lists BELL as a Lieutenant; 21April 1866, was a Naval Cadet 1857, and Sub-Lieutenant 20 March 1864.
Page 268 item 24 gives his War Service as "served in the Abyssinian campaign, 1868 (Abyssinian Medal)"

Kind regards
