Lovely medal, Grant! As already mentioned above acquiring a medal is the start of a very slippery slope which you may never find the end to!

I find the research aspect - i.e. finding out about the man behind the medal and the campaign for which it was awarded - very addictive!

All I can say is I can't wait to see your next one!

Hi Grant, I'm about to email you the entire 43rd Battalion Medal (w/ Fenian Raid 1870 Clasp) roll (5 pages).
Can I ask what Battalion / Regiment David Hamilton belonged to? I don't see him on the 43rd that I have.

Thanks, Darrell!

Sorry for any confusion .... not "David Hamilton" .... Rather, there were three forebears of mine enrolled in the 43rd Bttn, namely: David Rombough, Hamilton Rombough, and John Rombough ......

Grant

I am going to LAC next 23rd and will get a copy of the roll for you.

BTW I am also familiar with Rombough Rd as I used to work in that area back in the 1980's when I first started with the OPP.

Darrell:

Many thanks for the scans, which came through fine! I have tried to send you an e-mail response, but today my e-mail program seems to be "rejecting itself" - it won't let me send out any e-mails, and keeps giving some sort of "insecure" error message. (This includes a "test" e-mail I tried to send to myself ....) Gotta get on the line to Shaw Support, I guess!

Danny: Thanks for the offer, but Darrell has most kindly sent me scans of all the Medal Roll entries for the 43rd Battalion!

Grant you are welcome.
I think the roll Danny is talking about are the originals ... as typed or written out. The ones I sent (while still correct) were created and categorized by Thyen in an easier to read and more accessible format for the general population that cannot visit the archives.

Correct Darrell. The original rolls should also contain the location the medals were sent to.

Aaahhh ...... sounds like a copy of the original entry(ies) would be a good thing to have, then. I thought perhaps there would be no additional information, and would save Danny the trouble.

Are all three Rombough men likely to be listed on the same page in the original Medal Roll?

If all three are in the same battalion then they should be.

Hi Grant

I have the copy of the medal roll for you. All three were on the same page with the 43rd and living in Russell, Ontario at the time the medals were distributed. Please contact me via email so I can email the image. dannybou AT gmail DOT com

Many thanks, Danny.

E-mail sent.

The three Romboughs who served in the 43rd Battalion were carrying on family tradition of service to the Crown, as alluded to in my earliest postings in this thread. Although rather outside the purview of these forums, I thought the attached extract from the Roll of the 2nd Battalion, King's Royal Regiment of New York (largest Loyalist unit during the American Revolution) might be of some interest. This was the father (Jacob) and the oldest three of his four sons .... So far as is known, every person in Canada with the surname "Rombough" is descended from one of Jacob's four sons - Amos, William, John, and David. (I am a descendant of John.) - -

Thanks!

Hi Grant. The scans I sent a while back have all three men listed. That's all the info I have and only document that lists them on the Thyen's roll.
Did you receive it when I emailed to you?

Darrell:

Yes, I did receive the scans, and I thank you for them

(I did post on this thread confirming receipt of the scans, but perhaps you missed that. I was prevented from sending out e-mails for several days, which I why I did not respond directly ....Turns out I got infected with some sort of "spambot" which was using my e-mail address to generate thousands of spam e-mails, and my ISP had to block any outgoing e-mail until the problem was resolved.)
