Patrick SEERY, killed in action 1880 Maiwand

Postby jastapl » 22 Mar 2010 17:44

Patrick Seery is believed to be the brother of Margaret Seery who is my great grand mother. I am interested in any information sources I might use to find his birth place in Ireland, family history , etc. He was kill in action at Maiwand on July 27, 1880.

Thank you much.

Hi Jeff,

Well, Pte Patrick Seery was in the 66th (Berkshire) Regt.
Ordinarily I'd advise someone looking for the information you're after to look for the soldier's service papers in series WO97 at the National Archives. Unfortunately though, as your chap died whilst on service his papers won't have survived.

Pay and muster records at Kew would allow you to trace his service backwards to roughly the time he enlisted, but won't offer any clues to his origins I'm afraid.

Jeff

Our members Garen and Maiwander are Second Anglo-Afghan War enthusiasts and might also be able to help. Might be worth sending them a PM just in case they don't pick up this thread.

I'm afraid I don't have anything to add really. The main question refers to his birth in Ireland and family history which I can't help with. The only extra information concerning Maiwand is that apparently his medal was unclaimed, though that's not from the medal roll, it's in Richard's Maiwand book.

Best - Garen.

Thank you all for your input. I will continue to look through birth records in Longford, Ireland whwere Margaret Seery was born.
Again thank you.
