I have a grandfather who joined the Royal Artillery in 1885 when he was 16 going on 17. ot away with it too for the rest of his army days. He did 25 years
in the RGA retiring in 1910. In 1914 he was called up into the special reserve and served another 4 years and 10 months, and finished up the RSM of 30 HAG
in the GW.
I know lots about himbecause I lived with him and his wife for the first 21 years of my life, with my mother and sister. The less said about father the better.
However we led a good life (he came to Australia in 1925) and we lived in Warrnambool a country town in the west of Victoria.
His brother was also in the army ASC in 1899 and went to South Africa and served until 1920 when he also retired from the army. Have another g/uncle although
strictly he doesn't come under the Victorian wars bit as he joined in 1904 and retired in 1940 as a Major Quartermaster.

Researching wife's side of the family. Her Great Grandfather served in WWI and the Boer War, and reputedly other Victorian campaigns. The family mentions he went to Sudan, Egypt, and India, Africa, and South Africa. I figure if I work backwards from WWI I might be able to sort this all out piece by piece. I haven't been able to find out much so far, and I'm kinda stumped as to where to look next in the National Archives. If Anyone has ideas, I'm all ears. So far I have the following

Name: Harry Matthew Hewett (possibly spelled "Hewitt" pre-WWI*)
Born: March 17th, 1879 in Leeds Yorkshire, UK
Served South Africa, 1900-1902 - Rank and Regiment as yet unknown
Served WWI, 1914-1918 - WO2/QMS, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry

*Note the Leeds Boer War Memorial in the Town Hall - listing those who served and survived as well as those who died - lists a "Hewitt, H. L/Cpl, 2nd (West Yorkshire) Volunteers, Royal Engineers" as "survived". Am unsure if there's a typo somewhere but I'd be curious to know if the birthdates match. It might be my man Harry, and if so would be a great find and clear up at least part of his story.

William Bunting b 1798 Penrith, Cunberland /22nd of Foot Regiment and William Bunting b1819 Old Catton, Norfolk/22nd of Foot Regiment
I am researching my Great x 2 and Great Grandfather's army careers.
William Snr enlisted in the 22nd of Foot 19th April 1813 aged 14 at Stockport. Was there a depot/barracks or recruiting centre in Stockport?
In his carreer he served from 5 February 1827 to 31st May 1833 in the West Indies. What was the regiment doing in the West Indies?
I think he returned to Chatham. On the 19th May 1834 he sailed from Chatham to Hull. He disembarked on the 3rd June 1834.
According to the paylists he spent the remainder of his time at Hull until his discharge on the 31st May 1836.( he spent time in the regimental
hospital). Was there a Regimental depot/barracks at Hull for recruitment and /or discharge?
His son William Jnr also joined the 22nd in 1835 at Hull. I am still waiting for his records but he may have been with the regiment at the battles
of Meeanee,Hyderabad and Scinde.
Regards,
Hedley Bunting

Good evening,
Distant cousin of my wife, Troop Sergeant Major William Clark Curling, 5th Royal Irish Lancers. He served with the regiment 30 September 1880 (age 18 yrs) till his accidental parade ground death in Meerut India on 03 February 1892. Am looking for any photos, etc. and any info on his military career. He is buried in Meerut.
Thanks, Gerry Rempel

I am currently researching relatives on my paternal grandmothers side.

James FOX, RN, chef on gunboats, time span at least 1854-1874, and was on HMS Decoy gunboat in 1874. I have a medal list for him, with maybe a clasp missing that covers this era, then he disappears after 1874, so probably lost at sea. I would like to find his records as his history is a bit of a mystery at the moment.
medal list I have is....Baltic Medal 1854-55, Crimean War Medal 1854 - 56, Second China War Medal 1857-60, Ashantee War Medal 1873-74, and the Turkish Crimea Medal.
AT THIS MOMENT I DO NOT HAVE HIS SERVICE NUMBER AND AM HAVING TROUBLE TRYING TO FIND IT, AND IF ANYONE COULD HELP I WOULD BE GRATEFUL

Henry WOODHEAD RE, sapper......long history of 24 years 1889-1918, and fortunately he received a ww1 pension so I have all his army records for this period. He served in West Africa 1897-1898 and Gold Coast 1901-1903. He was a telegraphy specialist I believe and achieved highest NCO rank. Awarded...mention in despatches, DCM, Long Service and Good Conduct with gratuity, and the Meritorious Service Award given to him during the 1940's, well after he retired in 1918.

Many thanks to everyone, and if I see something I can help with, I will
