William PARTINGTON, 47th Regt Crimea Medal

Postby J.Martin » 30 Jun 2012 20:49

Hello,
I am trying to verify the Crimea medal bar entitlement for W. Partington, 47th Regiment. I do not have access to the Crimea Medal rolls here in Virginia. Any help, or information about Partington is appreciated as I believe he served here in the United States in our Civil War after his Crimea service.

I have found two entries for a William Partington on the Crimea rolls for the 47th Foot.

The first confirms the medal with clasps 'Alma' and 'Inkermann'.

The second confirms the clasp 'Sebastopol' and stated that he "Died Scutari 26 February 1855"

Hope that helps?

Mark

Thanks Mark,
Your help establishes that William Partington did not serve in the American Civil War. Sallie Parkington immigrated to Virginia during the Civlil War and was a celebrated actress and favorite in Virginia Confederate circles. Sallie was a friend of John Wilkes Booth who assasinated Abraham Lincoln. Her brother William, also an English immigrant, served in the Confederate army and survivied the Battle of Gettysburg. Speculation was her brother William Partington CS Army was a Crimea Veteran. Your research shows he was not the same William Partington of the 47th. Near my home Capt. Bradford Smith Hoskins, 44th Foot and Crimea veteran, lies buried near where he was killed while serving with Col John S. Mosby the famous Confederate Guerrilla leader. Charles Green my ancestors' neighbor flew the British flag on his property and claimed amnesty for any British subject from the war in my parish. Hoskins was a constant guest although he was shot on a raid less than a mile from Greens' home. It was for that reason it was thought Partington may also have been a British ex-patriot as there were many British immigrants and 1st generation brits who fought for the South. Your information is greatly appreciated. Thanks Again.

Very happy to have been of help. In a way I am kind of sad he wasn't the same man as I do find it quite fascinating when you find individuals who served for one nation's army to also serve another's later on.

None-the-less still interesting stuff!
