Clothing of Imperial troops at Taku 1860.

I'm asking on behalf of a photo colourist, a good one, about the bannermen casualties photographed by Beato at Taku. From the osprey books on the subject I have gathered they are wearing generally common peasant clothes with a surcoat over the top bearing a unit name and a slogan. Would this impression be correct?
