A great picture

For all discussions relating to the First, Second and Third China (Boxer Rebellion) Wars fought between 1842 and 1900.

I wrote "sister forum" becouse the layout and contents are very similar - not becouse it is actually a sister forum (it is not). Or maybe I just subconsciously treat AHF as a continuation of Victorian Wars.

AHF encompasses the time period from 1900 to 1945, so after satisfying your victorian urges here, you can go straight to world wars era.

I had confused myself somehow when thinking in my mind of RWF and the USMC, when what I had read in HMS Terrible's book was that the "British contingent" (of the allied force) had, via confusion, been the first to reach the legation (and not 1 RWF). Here is the passage to which I was referring: http://archive.org/stream/commissionhms ... 6/mode/2up

Pages 288 and 289 refer, as do the 1st Sikhs and 7th Bengal Infantry.

mea culpa x 2!!!!!!!!

It was 2nd RWF, not 1st. The First battalion was busy sorting out the Boers at the time.

Ha ha...yes indeed. How could I have stolen the limelight from the glorious second. A slip of the mind and fingers, but most remiss nonethless.

There is a somewhat larger and clearer version of this photograph posted in the "Eight Nation Alliance" entry on Wikipedia - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/04/Troops_of_the_Eight_nations_alliance_1900.jpg

The caption identifies the troops (left to right) as being from Britain, United States, Russia, British India, Germany, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy and Japan ...... no identification of specific units, however.

I extracted this from C.B. Norman's book Battle Honours of The British Army. Note that those given the "Pekin" honour did not receive the "China" one. He doesn't identify the battalion of the RWF but according to regiments.org it was indeed the 2nd.

At the risk of upsetting the apple cart I would suggest that the gentleman 3rd from the left in the photo is from the NSW Naval Brigade (NSW Naval Forces). The webbing set up seems to fit that conclusion. They would have been equipped with the Lee Metford MKII star. One of their roles was to guard the British Legation following arrival in Peking as well as local area security and public order. They provided a local police force as well

One of the first joint international expeditions of its type, if not the first. (different I mean than just two or three allies going to war for the usual reasons)
