Individual memorial to Lt Maclaine, 2nd Afghan War

Postby maiwander » 27 Jul 2008 09:21

Sometime ago whilst I was researching the part E Brigade B Battery RHA took in the battle of Maiwand, I read that one of the officers, Lieut. Hector Maclaine was captured during the retreat to Kandahar and was subsequently murdered in Ayub Khan's camp just before Roberts Force over ran his defences. It is a long story and one that I recount later - however, I traced his home town and found that his local parish church was still being used - that is unusual these days in itself! - and that there was a memorial window to him. This was erected from public subscriptions and there was enough money left over to erect a water fountain in the village where he lived. The images were taken by the Parish Clerk, they are quite good, but of course if you put them on Picture Manager or something similiar you can enlarge them for better detail.

I not sure if this is the type of memorial that fits the section as it is a personal one - but it is unusual in the sense that it is to a soldier who was murdered as opposed to being killed in action. Garen has these images on his website as well.

They should have died in their own loved land.
With friends and kinsmen near them.
Not withered thus on a foreign strand,
With no thought, save heaven to cheer them.

Hi Richard

Thanks for posting, very interesting to see his memorial still exisits. I wonder how many little known memorials like this exist around the UK that we simply have no idea are there?

Mark

P.S. Any memorial, publicly or privately erected, fits this section :)
