45th Medal Entitlement?

Hi folks, I'm back to pick some brains!
I have been here before and have had some wonderful assistance in understanding service records etc.

My query on this occasion is in relation to a soldier (no 1973 Alexander Galbraith) deployed with the 45th in the Cape for a period of 16.5yrs finishing around 1862 (1845ish to 1862ish although specific dates not outlined on the record I have. Joined Feb 1841 - left April 1862.)

My question is would he have been likely to have be awarded any campaign medals during this time, as I believe that there were small wars over this period. I have been unable to find any record regarding medals on the usual research platforms.

Thank you for taking an interest to read!

Kind regards
Speedy

This page at North West Medals (a useful site) gives an indication of possible medals and clasps to the 45th: http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britis ... giment.htm

I trawled through all the rolls of the 45th for this medal, and your man doesn't appear anywhere. Whilst technically he should have been eligible as he was in South Africa at the time, it would appear that for some reason he was not awarded it.

The only way of pinning down his service for certain would be to investigate the relevant muster rolls at The National Archives. They would show precisely where he was serving at any given time and would likely explain why he didn't get the medal.

Tony.

Hi Tony thanks for the look up greatly appreciated, and guidance of course! He served 16.5 years there with the 45th as a young man, and how he may managed to avoid qualification is staggering to say the least, but your advice may shed some light if I ever manage to get to the IWM.

Cheers
Speedy.
