Google Earth Coordinates for Victorian Battlefields

Postby Mark » 30 Jun 2013 20:11

Following on from a thread on our sister-forum is there any mileage in creating a thread that contains the coordinates for finding the numerous Victorian battlefields on Google Earth? I know member Amarpal Sidhu did a similar exercise for his first book on the First Anglo-Sikh War. Would members be interested in this and if so do any have such coordinates to share?

I've found iSandlwana and Rorkes Drift but I don't know how to retrieve coordinates from Google Earth or Maps to post them. It shouldn't be too hard to ID the Crimean battles either.

I must admit I am not an expert on Google Earth coordinates but will try and do some research into it.

Paste the following latitude and longitude (D M S) into the 'Search' box in the top left corner of Google Earth. Then push the 'Search' button.
51 30 06 N 00 08 28 W
It should take you to Buckingham Palace. The same can be done with other formats of lat & long as well.

Just read your post on Google Earth, i have used it to look at the battlefield of Maiwand .
If you type Mahmundabad Afganistan into the search engine top left and press search
it will zoom in on a spot just above the village. Khik the site of the last stand is just to the
Northeast. Site of the main battlefield is just West of Khik, I assume doing it this way will hold
true for other sites.
