New member .. g/grandson of a 10th Hussar

Hello all,

I'm delighted to have found this site! My great grandfather was in the XRH in the Egypt & Sudan campaigns and in the Great Boer War. He was Arthur Hughes-Onslow, a well known amateur jockey of the time who was so scarred by the experience of taking horses into battle that, although he rejoined the Regiment for the Great War, shot himself in August 1914 on the way to the front.

I have a scruffy collection of contemporary press cuttings in a scrap book kept by his wife, his medals, and a few other bits & bobs. I hope this site will help me find out more about the Regiment, the campaigns, the men Arthur served with and the man himself.

I also have an album of XRH photographs from the late 19th century which I'm passing into the care of the Horsepower museum.

Right - I'm off to explore the forum. I'm glad to be a part of it.

Hello John

Welcome!

Great post - I collect details of Anglo-Boer War soldiers for my website http://www.boerwarregister.com. Your g/grandfather was a very interesting man, a very unfortunate death though.

I found his obituary from Wisden: http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/228030.html in which it is noted "It was while engaged as remount officer at Southampton that he was taken fatally ill." Some sort of cover for suicide/accidental death?

Hello John,
Welcome on board this wonderful forum, I’m sure you will enjoy the journey.

I am delighted to make contact with a relative of the XRH, your grandfather Arthur Hughes-Onslow was certainly one of the regiment’s well respected officers. Having served in the regiment myself,[that's another story] I have for the past 40 years felt a great affiliation with the Tenth and still keep in touch with old comrades. Having written many articles about its exploits, including its 10 year East Indies tour, this you may be aware of, took in the Afghanistan, Egypt and Sudan campaigns.

It was interesting to learn that you have his wife’s scrapbook, these are usually a great source of research information, particularly when they come direct from the family. If I can assist you in anyway, just ask, if I cannot answer your questions, I'm sure someone else in here will be only too willing to help you.

In the meantime, please feel free to drop me a PM.

Regards
