Hi from Spain

Postby Sue.Fretwell » 10 Jul 2012 11:00

I am retired and living in Spain, while the temperature is in the 40s I am spending my time indoors with the aircon on, researching the family tree. 2222 Pte John Britton is my current project, he died in the poorhouse after being discharged in 1847 from the Chelsea Pensioners Hospital due to paralysis after 16 years service in the Grenadiers, 4.5 of which was in Canada. Any suggestions on where I can find more infoon where he may have been? His discharge papers say he lost the use of his limbs after a fever and was bedridden for 13 months to discharge. Anyone have any ideas on what may have caused this?

Hi Sue

Warm welcome to the forum! Have you had a look on Ancestry and Find My Past for any information yet?

Sue

Find My Past does have some Victorian Army service records which might include the one you are looking IF it has survived. I don't have a FMP subscription myself at present but maybe a fellow forum member who does can help you out? Ancestry only has surviving First World War period records but does have most census records and the Birth, Marriage and Death indexes.

Alternatively if you live anywhere near or fancy a trip to the National Archives in Kew, London, you could have a look to see if they still exist. Many records have long since been lost although many still survive - so it is a bit hit and miss.

Another place to look is the associated regimental museum in case they have any records also.
