Hi Tony

A warm welcome to the forum, great to have a Crimea enthusiast aboard :)

I only have one Crimea Medal to the 38th Foot - they seem pretty scarce to the Staffords - but it is a beaut. The recipient was Killed in Action during the first attack on the Great Redan at Sebastopol. Have you come across any other Crimeas to the 38th on your collecting travels?

Hi Mark, thank you for providing this forum.
I'm just getting into collecting medals, Crimean at the moment.
I have a post on a Mr. Edward Dwyer of the 89th Regiment of foot and would be honoured to receive input from yourself or any viewer.
Although, please accept my apologies, in my post, I put the word war in error instead of battle.

Thanks again,
Chris.

Hello All:

I am a great reader (40 plus years) and collector of of British Colonial & Roman military history literature - my job takes me many places and so take every opportunity to visit the sites and in some cases follow the old campaign trails and discovered from the dumps that the British Army in Ghana (Gold Coast) seemed to survive on beer, gin, champagne, ink and castor oil during the later Ashanti battles.

This is a fascinating site and look forward to meeting fellow enthusiasts

Welcome to the forum, Pat! :)

Must be great having a job that takes you to the sites of former campaign trails. Where in particular have you visited?

Hi all.

Just browsing. You have some interesting topics to look at.

I'm a re-enactor and have an interest in British and colonial history from about 1600 onwards. I normally re-enact mid C18th British Infantry and cavalry but do Crimean (11th Hussars) when I get the chance.

I live in Lichfield so have a particular interest in the 38th and frequently visit the Staffords Regimental Museum. In fact the curator there is a member of our 1740s Dragoon Unit.

Keep up the interesting subjects.

Cheers

Hi Rob

Nice to see a fellow Staffords enthusiast here on the VWF :)

I have an interest in the 38th, 64th, 80th and 98th Regiments of Foot but in particular the 38th and 80th (and South Staffords post-amalgamations).

Are you interested in any particular campaign in which the 38th took part?

I've studied the Campaign in the West Indies which was quite interesting as it coincides with the period I re-enact.

Hello Mark and all forum members.

I would like to introduce myself as a new member to this excellent forum. I live in Surrey, England and have an interest in all aspects of British military history. I spent 12 years in the Coldstream Guards joining as a boy of 16 hence my forum user name and avatar.

My current collecting passion revolves around cabinet cards, carte de visites and photographs of Victorian era British military subjects and the subsequent research these afford. I look forward to learning what I can from the various threads on this site and sharing my limited but ever increasing knowledge of the fascinating period of military history which this forum covers.

Hi Mark,
I think that I should state that I am a Stamp Collector.
Doing an internet search I came across your site and I noticed that one of the regiments that you are interested in is the 80th Foot, I also have an interest in this regiment, and hope that you may be able to help me.
I have some letters sent from Australia and India to the UK in 1842-1851, they are Soldiers letters, and were sent at the 1d concessional rate and had to be signed by the officer in charge, so I have the signatures of several officers.
I am finding it hard to find out any information about Privates Fredrick Kemp and J. Davis who are the writers of the letters.
Best regards David :)

Hello Mark, I'm Di Barron living in Idaho near Yellowstone Park or though Portsmouth born.My interest is to trace my GGGrand father and Great Grandfathers military records. John Fidge served in the 1st Royal Dragoons about 1841 to a 1851 (Nottingham and Ireland) then disappeared with his wife somewhere.I'd love to know what Wars he might have fought in. George Fidge his son served in the RMA in Portsmouth abt 1864.It's difficult trying to get info other than online as I live so far away so hoping I can meet friends who can help and who I can help . So this is a big HELLO to everyone.

I am delighted to have come across this web site as for many years I have been a student of British military history during the Victorian period with special interest pertaining to Africa and India. I now reside in California, however, as a young boy living with my Grandmother in Ireland I first began to learn of my own family connections with the military of this period. Recently I have been compiling a Family History and am at this time particularly interested in a Great-great uncle named Daniel Whyte (often spelled White) who was a Quartermaster Sergeant with the 63rd regiment (West Suffolk) prior to 1879 and was promoted to Lieutenant-Quartermaster of the Regiment on the 28th March 1879 while they were serving in India and accompanied them when they marched to Kandahar, Afghanistan and later took part in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882, receiving both the Afghan Medal and Egyptian Medal as well as the Khedive Star. He was later promoted to Captain after the 63rd became The 1st Battalion, Manchester Regiment and retired in 1890. I would greatly appreciate if any member might have in their possession H.C.Wylly's History of the Manchester Regiment (or any other source) that has any photographs pertaining to the regiment during the period 1860 through 1890 and would be willing to send me copies of same, as so far I have been unable to come up with any. I would be most happy to pay for any expenses involved. I am very excited about scanning through the numerous postings on this site as there must be a wealth of information there dealing with the many campaigns that have attracted my attention over many years.

Regards,

Malcolm.

Hello, I'm completely new to this and utterly confused. I'm searching for a 4xgreat grandfather who was an Ensign in the 64th Regiment of Foot 1804, and his son who drowned in the China Sea commanding HMS Princess Charlotte...Can anyone tell me where I look next, please?

Hi rmjarvis

Welcome to the VWF. Your 4x great grandfather dates put him somewhat out of scope for this forum but we may be able to dig you up something on his son. I suggest you create a new topic in the Researching Individual Soldiers and Sailors part of this forum here: http://www.victorianwars.com/viewforum.php?f=82. Include whatever you know about your man's name etc. - always makes it a lot easier! If you don't have this info handy, you may want to type it up offline and then cut and paste it across to the forum. If you take too long editing a post the system will time out and you'll lose you changes. Cheers,

Liz
