I had a quick look at the list for 1904 and he is only listed as a retired colonel. But mistaking a colonel for a general is such a 'howler' it would surely have raised a few eyebrows. Maybe it would be worth checking subsequent issues of Lillywhites to see if they issued an apology!

Thanks Eric. Yes I looked at the list in 1890 and 1915, and he is consistently a Colonel. The Lancashire Infantry Museum offers the Lilywhites archive for sale on disc so I will delve further to see if anything else comes to light.
