I was thinkng something similar! Many soldiers resented moving from numbered regiments to titles and numbers peristed for many years after in an unofficial manner. Even in the 1920s, for example, the 2nd North Staffords still often referred to themselves as the 98th.
That said it is a sad story.

Stories like this always confuse me. In an effort to save money companies and departments often undergo rebranding excercises which, in reality, cost millions of pounds rather than saving money. Leave things as they are and save the money that will be spent on countless beauracrats shuffling papers around and charging eyewatering amounts of money.
