Replica cigarette cards - who makes them?

Postby Mark » 30 Apr 2012 11:27

I have noticed that modern replicas of some of the old Victorian cigarette cards depicting the deeds of the British soldier etc. are appearing for sale on eBay and elsewhere. Does anyone know who is manufacturing these?

I've just had a look at the Taddy's Victoria Cross Heroes set I bought off Ebay some years ago (the originals, as I'm sure you know, being breathtakingly expensive) and the back says "Reproduction by Card Promotions 1996". The illustrated fronts are good and clear copies, but the backs are a bit roughly printed. I'm not sure if these are the ones you've seen?

Fifty odd years ago a great uncle of mine died, and my cousins and I were given a couple of biscuit tins full of old cigarette cards to sort through, and put into sets. My great aunt then said we could keep those that interested us. I still have these, most being on a military or naval theme, but I had not realised how much they are now worth, so thank you for raising this topic – not that I intend to sell them.
