Images of Victorian Generals

Postby Mark » 27 Nov 2015 13:58

Dear All

I appear to have adopted an unintentional hobby of collecting antique prints of generals who served during Queen Victoria's reign. These have been acquired for several projects I am currently working on, and I thought I'd share them with the forum membership via the gallery at: gallery/album.php?album_id=5

As I acquire and scan more I will add them to the album.

Hi Mark

The top four look like they originated in a work called something like 'Celebrities of the Army'. I have a copy here somewhere. Well worth adding to your collection if you haven't got one already.

As ever

Yep, they feature in that book alright. As chance would have it I've got it in front of me.

Cheers guys. The colour images have a short biography of the individual on the reverse, so sounds very likely. I wasn't aware of this book, but now I am I will try and get hold of a copy :)

The book has arrived and it is excellent! £22 seems too cheap for so many great images!

As and when I get chance to scan the pictures, I will upload them into the gallery.

Mark;

Thanks for sharing such a great, even iconic, image of " K. " Having let in a British officer who became an Egyptian Army general first, I thought I would submit an image of another Victorian-era general who also served The Khedive at the same time as Kitchener. Although hardly a household name in Victorian military circles, Ferik ( Lieutenant General ) Ahmed Djelal Eddin saw more active service than Kitchener, commanding the Fetia cavalry during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, and surviving the Siege of Plevna. For his collective service in numerous other Ottoman campaigns, he was awarded the Iftihar Medal in gold by the Sultan.

It could be argued that although he lacked Kitchener's mysterious blue eyes, his mustache is even more impressive!

Cheers,

Mark

Twenty eight Generals from the book Transvaal War Album. I have photographed them but too large over 1 MiB.
I could email the photos to you as it takes too long on my computer to downsize them since it's size then pixels, just not computer saavy enough. Most if not all of these generals were at the rank before the Boer War.
