Victorian Military Movies

Can anyone recommend any movies that depict this period? I am aware of only a few: Zulu, Zulu Dawn, and Khartoum. How about any good documentaries?

My favourite... The Man Who Would Be King. So much that is good about it!

I know these may sound daft but what about the remake of the "Four Feathers", "Young Winston Churchill" and "Breaker Morant"?

Thank you for the additional titles. I don't think that these movies received the same press in the US that they would have received in the UK. Additionally, most of these movies were released before my time, so I am quite ignorant of what is out there!

I watched "Zulu" and "The Man Who Would Be King" over the weekend, and enjoyed both. I have seen "Zulu" before, but it has been at least 10 years since my last viewing. "King" was more of an adventure in the vein of H. Rider Haggard than I expected, but it was quite enjoyable and seems to portray the spirit of the times quite nicely. I think "The Four Feathers" will be next!

The Four Feathers is good but get the later one with Robert Powell in.

Its a real pitty the film industry in the UK can no longer make such movies - they would prove too expensive - and Hollywood appears not to have any interest unless the movie is about an American

Has anyone seen the BBC series "Rhodes" on Cecil Rhodes? I recall hearing about it at some point in the mid to late 1990s, but it never aired here in the States.

Yes I certainly have and it is an extremely good series - well worth watching.

It was available on DVD in the UK and a quick search of Amazon.co.uk shows the following:

I watched "Zulu Dawn" this weekend. I was impressed with the sheer number of extras involved and enjoyed the film overall. It did not have the emotional cache of "Zulu", but was still good fun.

Its a pity present day filmakers won't pick up these old classics and shot some remakes. Plenty of violence but not enough sex for Hollywood I guess!?

I think there is some good Hollywood material there. What about "Fighting Mac"? I'll have to skim through Eminent Victorian Soldiers to find some good Hollywood sex and violence.

I just enjoyed viewing "The Four Feathers"--the newest version starring Heath Ledger. I quite enjoyed it, but it did raise a question--when did the British begin wearing Sam Browne belts? I assume this movie took place ion the late 1880s, and all of the officers were wearing what appeared to be Sam Brownes with brown leather service scabbards for their P1854 swords.

Next in my Victorian military movie queue: "Royal Flash".
