SOLDIER'S POCKET BOOK FOR FIELD SERVICE | Wolsely 1871

Postby Simon_h » 18 Nov 2010 00:11

I have recently managed to get hold of this book and its an awesome resource. It was written by General Sir Garnet Wolsely in 1871, my question is as follows however obviously a lot of the information will hold true for the Anglo-Boer war but had Infantry and Cavalry regiments been reorganised in between the 1870s and the 1890s? There are some superb tables of organisation, but I can't help but think these may have changed considerably in twenty years. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Check out the tables of organisation in The Army Book of The British Empire by Goodenough and Dalton. It can be got as a print version, or for free as a PDF (outside Europe - or in Europe if you know how to use a proxy  ) or read online here: http://www.archive.org/details/armybookforbrit00daltgoog. It shows what the state of play is in 1893. Things are pretty much the same as for the Boer War except for the actual establishment of privates. Also remember that the regimental system is reformed for infantry in 1881 (Childers Reforms).

EDIT: Forgot to say, the Soldier's Pocket Book is a great resource! Although of course for 'soldier' read 'officer'.
