9 pounder - Alberta Field Force 1885

Postby Scona » 11 Dec 2011 19:40

The Alberta Field Force of the North West Canada Rebellion was armed with one 9 pounder gun. This belonged to the North West Mounted Police at Fort McLeod, Alberta. The gun, and its crew were attached to the column under the command of General Strange, and was used during the pursuit of Big Bear's band prior to, and at the battle of Frenchman's Butte. The gun made some definite kills. It is now being housed at the Debney Armouries in Edmonton, Alberta, by the Royal Canadian Artillery, although it belongs to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I was given permission to view the gun this past Spring.

Great photos!

This engraving and text relating to it, from The Canadian Pictorial & Illustrated War News for 18 July 1885, is of direct relevance -
