I'll give you a brief reply, and please consider it an opinion rather than a definitive answer. There are many more knowledgeable than I here but for my money they appear to be a type known under various names such as rundlets, rum kegs or swiglers and popular from around 1750 to 1850. They appear to have had a variety of handles or method of carry and were the forerunner it seems of the drum canteen and could be used for any liquid.

thanks chaps.i have a friend who has one of those officer barrel type with what looks like cane hoops around them from crimea time.on internet i found these i have, are called cottrels evolving from leather water beer wine bottles.
