QSA/KSA

QSA/KSA

Postby jersey » 23 Dec 2009 11:03

My wife's g/uncle had two tours in SA during the Boer War, the first in 1 W.A.M.I. and the second the 5th W.A.M.I.
The periods were as follows. Left Perth WA Nov 7 1899 and returned Dec 29 1900. The second tour Left Perth WA April 1901 and
returned April 1902.
My guesswork is that he would have been entitled to both QSA and KSA. Is this correct.

David,

To qualify for the KSA you needed 18 months service in total including during 1901 and/or 1902. It would seem he did qualify for the KSA. Have you checked the records at the Australian War Memorial?

Forgive my ignorance but what does W.A.M.I. stand for? I am guessing M.I. is for Mounted Infantry but what about W.A.?

Mark,
Being an ignorant ex West Australian I had thought everyone would have known. Western Australia sent 6 contingents to SA during the war, each doing approx
one years service.
Meurig : I have his WW1 service papers only, this person had rather chequered career. 10th Light Horse for a couple of years, then wangled a discharge and joined the
RFA and then the RFC as an observer. I am led to believe from his SA descendants that he also joined the SA airforce during WW2 (at nearly 60) but didn't go overseas.

David,

He should have papers in SA for his WWII service, well worth seeking out. Try Gordon Bickley at bickley@telkomsa.net.

Steve,
Sorry delay, have been away enjoying xmas/new years hols. Man in question is Pte Alexander Edwin Love Reg No 1 1st W.A.M.I. and in the 5th W.A.M.I.
his unit number was 237. He may be listed as Edwin Alexander - had a habit of changing his christian names around.
Thanks for the offer and hope you have a happy new year.

David, Not on the roll under either of those two so at this stage would suggest he did not recieve the KSA.

Steve,
Thanks for your efforts, am a little bit surprised as his service in the 1st and 5th would make one feel that he would have been awarded both medals.
However as he is not on the rolls then I can only surmise that he didnt receive QSA/KSA.
Thanks again David

Meurig,
Certainly, but I have him as service No 1. His name was Edwin Alexander but he had a later habit of using Alexander Edwin just to confuse things a bit.
In the 5th West Australian contingent his number was 237.

Steve,
Thanks for that, that is a different Edwin Love. My wifes rel was Edwin Alexander Love born 1882 in Warragul Vic, father William Love. Whole family migrated to
Western Australia in 1898, some stayed in Perth others went to Dumbleyung (Abt 250 Km SE of Perth). Edwin was a horse breaker (as far as I can ascertain). Can give lots
more info but probably not applicable to this forum.
