Go Strong into the Desert

For all discussions relating to the Egyptian and Sudanese campaigns fought between 1882 and 1898.

The cover of the book is nothing short of fantastic....along the lines of all the late victorian artists that have illustrated color paintings of the Anglo Egyptian Sudan conflict. The uniforms on the Ansar are the pull-over pajama style with color trim and not the heavily "patched" pantaloon with pullover long shirt with turban that really chacterised the dress of the later Ansar regulars AND the Sudanese people in general. Good going Mike, as I know you directed the artist in an accurate portrayel of the combatents. Lots of caps on the Sudanese...accurate touch.
I can't pre-order this...I just keep getting sent in a circle. Well, at least I end up where I started. I'll try again

Hello ED

Kind words which Karl Kopinski's work does indeed fully warrant - Karl I think has done a really magnificent job on one of the iconic moments of Victorian military history. It is of course, as you will know from the officers' pugaree, a group of Heavy Camel Regiment lads in peril.

If you click into 'Ordering Information' when you first go to the site, and then into secure online ordering, it should bring up a secure order form for Perrys. Credit card job and all that.

Great News, and fantastic cover art! The detail is wonderful and I second the comments on such from ED, who knows his "stuff" from the postings of his I've read. Bravo!! I put in my pre-order and will wait somewhat patiently....alright, maybe somewhat impatiently..... for the news they will ship out. Again, Brilliant Mike and Karl Kopinski!

Hello All...
Mike, is this Karl Kopinski book cover painting complete or is it part of a larger panel? Also, will it be for sale as a print like so many of the Victorian and more contemporary prints like the military prints from that big dealer in England that has thosands of military prints for sale? (Go to war-art.com and checkout the Sudan, Zulu and other great prints).
Go to 'Wars in India' at the web site and check out the "Yellow Boys" prints. Great color

Out of curiosity, is there any incentive in pre-ordering, apart from obviously getting the book earlier: is the post-publication price going to be any different?

Hello ED

I haven't seen the original, as I am on a different continent to the publisher, but as far as I know what you see is what you get - it was specifically painted to serve as a jacket image for this book, so its orientation is portrait rather than landscape. I agree it would make a nice fine art print though whether it should be one or not is a decision that rests with the publisher and the artist. I have already suggested that it might sell well. You might like to email Perrys to lobby them to that effect.

Hi Alan

The price remains constant. The presses roll on Monday, so from that point on it's just ordering anyway. The advantage comes from the certainty of getting one. There is I am told a reasonably strong probability of the first batch selling out. I don't know what the interval would be between selling out and printing a second batch but there is usually an interval.

Thanks for the interest chaps.

Regards

Hiya Neil

You got your name in it - what more do you want!!

Ransom eh - now you know we never negotiate with tourists. Speaking of which I hope you and your notorious gang of desperadoes are full speed ahead for your next trip.

In the meantime keep the old girl safe; it'll give me an excuse to come and have another blastfest a la Aspinshaw.

As ever

Mike:

Its hard not to be delighted about acquiring books written by fellow enthusuiasts -- I have ordered my advance copy from Perry's and as a real bonus struck a fine deal on your 2 previous works HCMD and LWOF today. The first for a very good CDN 39.00 and the second for CDN 110.00. Both in very good nick. Such a good day!

roconn

Thanks Mike, that's excellent news! My copy will probably arrive just as I'm landing in the UK for the OMRS Convention in London. It will be something to look forward to when I return, penniless. Thank you for the update.

Cheers,

Mark
