Missing Attestation Papers

Postby MMP » 15 Oct 2017 17:45

I have searched Ancestry and Findmypast for attestation papers for James Hope, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), Service No. 955 but I'm having no luck. I can see James on medal lists for Egyptian campaigns in 1884 and 1885 (showing his name and service number). Could it be that his attestation papers have been lost, or am I searching in the wrong place? Thanks for any help offered.

Hello

FmP is the best place to search as they have all attestation papers up to 1922 - Ancestry only have the WW1 series.

Trying searching FmP by surname and regiment, omitting service number, using wildcards, like *Black*, and with the regiment's old numerical designation, also trying searching by brigade number.

Some attestation papers will have been lost, and I reckon some are still with the MOD if the pension was being claimed after 1922.

Good luck.

Thanks Meurig. I will try those search techniques on FmP.
