Here in the States, Amazon is still showing November release and a December delivery. Barnes and Noble says "November 19th". I know what I'm going to ask for at Christmas. Well, maybe Thanksgiving if I can't wait. I noted on the Book Depository (UK) it shows August 2012 as the projected publication date.

I have made contact with Mike, and he's given me more details of what's happening.

I understand that publication date is presently under consideration by the publisher. As soon as it's been decided, Mike's going to let it be known here. Apparently, the book has turned into something of an epic and Mike hopes that people will think that it was worth the extra wait.

Hopefully, this comes across as someone who loves Mike Snook's books and not a navel-gazer....Is there any update? I know this post mentioned Mike would let everyone know via this forum when things firm up. The publisher has been considering a publication date for many months - is there any update on possible publication? I realize that Mike probably has many irons in the fire and hope this isn't becoming a thorn in his side.

Hope it's not my fault - after pointing out a few flaws in some of Mike's assumptions on abu Klea a couple of years ago, perhaps he had to go back to the drawing board and rethink the whole thing?!?!

From amazon,

"...Due to a lack of availability, we will not be able to obtain the following item(s) from your order:

Mike Snook "BEYOND THE REACH OF EMPIRE: The Gordon Relief Expedition, 1884-5"

We've canceled the item(s) and apologize for the inconvenience. We must also apologize for the length of time it has taken us to reach this conclusion

If you are still interested in purchasing this item, it may be available from other sellers. . ..."
...

hmm, obviously something must be up.. i hope all is well with Mike as i've haven't seen him post here or anywhere else since last year..

Sal, ditto here. I'm hoping that the title of the work isn't prophetic - the publication of his research hopefully won't become "Beyond the Reach" of the publishing empire.

Although I thought that I had asked Amazon to let me know when there had been developments, I haven't received this message!

Anyway, I've written to Mike and asked if he can provide an update, and I'll let you know what (if anything) he says.

:( but keep :)

I have spoken to Mike who informs me he has been somewhat unwell the past few months hence his absence from the forum. However, he is hopefully on the mend and aims to return as soon as he can. With regards to his new book it has experienced delays but he says it should appear in the future so it is not a dead project.

Here's Mike's reply to my enquiry:

"Fear not, all is well. It'll be published in May, which is later than I would have liked, but not something I can control. It'll go back up on Amazon nearer the time no doubt."

So, good news ... !

Thank you to everyone who has kept us all posted on the developments with Mike and his latest book. I'm sorry to hear he has been unwell and glad he is on the mend. Of interest, I'm guessing that someone prodded Amazon, because today I received another email from them saying "this title is now available" with a delivery of 1-3 months. Have placed an order again and please pass along best wishes to Mike with his continued effort on this opus. It goes without saying that he has many avid readers around the world who hang expectantly for word of his doings. Lord, have I become an "historical" groupie or a Sudan "junkie"?
