Billy Budd, Second Afghan War

Postby adrian holdsworth » 25 Apr 2011 15:01

Hi.

I am trying to ascertain further information with regard to Billy Budd. He is well known and quoted in Derbyshire. He marched from Kubal to Kandahar in 1880, wearing no boots and his feet wrapped in cloth. Billy Budd lived and died at Woodbine Cottage, Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire. Grateful for any help.

Regards

Hello Adrian

I'm interested myself to know more about Billy Budd - do you have any sources for this story? I understand he is buried in the local church at Earl Sterndale - do you happen to know his date of death? We really need his regiment to find out more.

I've done some initial searches into newspapers (not beyond 1900), service records and census returns, but really need some dates to know if I'm getting a true negative result. I'm guessing he was a 'William Budd' - but it's also possible this was not a real name.

I'm a little wary of the story as I've come across other veterans who, once in a community isolated from their past, wrote themselves into the march from Kabul to Kandahar. However, that's not necessarily the case at all, and I would love to confirm the identity of 'Billy Budd'.
