Royal Artillery 2nd Afghan War

Postby Gezro » 20 Jan 2010 15:28

My Gt Gt Grandfather (Henry Frederick) was assigned to siege train with 13/8 RA towards Kandahar from Sukkur (stopped when news of Kandahar taken). I have several original documents of Henry's but I don't understand what the 13/8 means, he was also with other regiments like the (9/10), can anyone help with this please.

His regiment was the Royal Artillery.
The 13/8, 9/10 or whatever is the designation of his particular battery.
So 13/8 RA, for example, is 13th Battery, 8th Brigade RA.

It was common practice for an artilleryman to serve in various different batteries during his service.
