Vereker at Isandlwana

Postby rayhun » 27 Apr 2012 02:54

In the film Zulu Dawn there seemed to be a tendency to give Lt Vereker quite a bit of film time . In most books i have read he isnt even mentioned .Am i missing something ??.He , i believe was related to some pollie. (that i would keep very quiet). I believe he pinched someones horse ,gave it back then got killed. Apart from that can anyone give me more info on him . Maybe there is no more ? Also he shot the Zulu who pinched the flag . mmm. we shall see about that.

Thank You

His father was Standish Prendergast Vereker, 4th Viscount Gort 1819-1900. Lt. Raw's account states that Vereker was given a horse which was then claimed by a member of the NNC as being his. Vereker surrendered the horse to him and returned to the fight in the camp where he was killed. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown. The incident of the colour in the film is pure fiction, the colour was lost in the river while Melville and Coghill were trying to cross and recovered later in the year. Thanks Trooper

Ian Knight plus other authors have explained or should i say not sought to give Vereker a lot of "page " time . I was merely wondering WHY did the film not give more time to Coghill and Melville or other brave men . Bearing in mind not to underestimate the contribution Vereker made .
